CANTERBURY PUBLIC SCHOOL
Participation, Equity & Excellence
Hi, I'm Miss Aitken, assistant principal
for kindergarten at Canterbury Public School. I hear you're thinking of joining us. Let me show you around.
First, it's important to know our school is on Wangal and Bidjigal lands near the lovely Cooks River.
We acknowledge the traditional owners here and pay our respects to Elders past, present, and emerging.
Now, let's imagine you've come to school on your first day. You come in through our gates and see our huge playground. Use your imagination. Can you see your friends?
But what happens once we are at school? In the morning, we play with our friends. When we hear the bell ring, we line up with class on our dots. Once we have lined up, we wait for our teacher. Then we follow them upstairs to our classroom in one straight line. Well, it's nearly straight.
Once inside, we hang up our bags on our hook. We have a hook, each with our name on it. We sanitise our hands and enter the classroom. Our classroom is a great place; we learn to do lots of things. And we play lots of games, too. In the morning, we learn to read and write.
We need a break from our learning now, because our brains do get tired. During the morning, we have our Crunch and Sip. This means we eat a piece of fruit or some
vegetables and drink some water. Delicious. Once our morning learning session is finished,
we go out into the playground to have lunch and play.
Would you like to see how big our playground is? Look.
We have many places to play at lunch. We have a basketball court, handball squares,
climbing equipment and soccer fields. If you want to play quieter games, we have
our Fun Zone, where you can make things or use your imagination to tell stories with
different kinds of toys. We also have a library with many books and tables where you can draw or play quiet games like chess.
After lunch, we go back to our classroom and do some more learning. We learn how to count using numbers, and we play lots of counting and number games. We also learn about where we live, and things that happened long ago. About the weather, how to draw, and how to make music. So many things to learn.
There are also other things we can do at school. Some of them happen before school, like our Choir and Green Thumbs program if you like singing or growing things in the
garden. We also have groups for those who like dancing or yoga or making beautiful art, or learning Spanish, or playing chess. There are so many things to do at our school.
Did you notice how all the children wear the same clothes? This is called a uniform. When children come to our school, they wear a uniform to show they are proud to attend it school, but also to show they belong to us. Our uniform keeps us warm during the winter,
and nice and cool throughout the summer. I hope this has helped you learn more about our school.
We look forward to meeting you.
